Surprised by joy, Romans 5:1-11

This summer Trent has been preaching a short series of sermons from Romans chapters 5-8.

The first is a message from Romans 5:1-11 called Surprise by Joy

Here are the notes in a varied outline form:

Surprised by joy: Romans 5:1-11
The surprising power the Gospel brings us to rejoice
Intro

    1. Story about the power of surprise to bring us joy. Whenever we experience a relationship that is free from expectations they are full of surprise and they have the power to bring us joy…
    2. Fallen Condition Focus - Why we need to look at Rom 5?  We all struggle to find joy in our lives. Especially when we stress out to find whether we get the promotion…as we wonder why we are still suffering physically or financially. You might be miserable. You may just be bored, but we all struggle to find joy
    3. What I hope you take away from this?
      1. If you not yet believer? Usually some lack of joy has prompted your spiritual quest. You have tried to find satisfaction in work, jobs, travel, things…but longings remain. You might relate to CS Lewis, who was skeptical “If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world”
      2. Believer? This message might be convicting because we know we ought to have a solid joy, I hope this passage will show us why are not rejoicing like we ought and lead us again to see the surprising power of the Gospel
    4. Plan? Three ways the Gospel brings surprising power to rejoice
    5. Pray
  1. First way the Gospel brings surprising power to rejoice?
    1. Verses 1-2 The power to rejoice on a judgment day
    2. Dig - Sharp why? Whether we believe in an ultimate judgment day, we experience penultimate judgment days…like hearing back about a promotion, proposing marriage…like receiving notice of a credit application…Do you know what this feels like? and depending on whether this judgment is important to your sense of identity or security, or comfort you can feel all kids of fear or anxiety…
    3. What is this passage showing us?  - Imagine a throne room at time of war, introduced, stand in grace, once all the skimaches are finished, a final judgment day will be held and you will be declared once again right with the King by the Kings provision and receive an eternal inheritance…just wait until I’m finished,
    4. Packer quote “Jesus the LORD, like his Father is holy and pure. We live under his eye, he knows our secrets, and on judgment day our whole life will be reviewed. If we know ourselves at all, we know we are not fit to face him. What are we to do?” Trust in the coming judge to be your present justifier…ask for the introduction by faith in his grace now so that you rejoice when you think about the day you meet Him.
    5. Do you want this kind of peace?  (heart) this surprising ability to face promotion day?, diagnosis day?  pay day? or even final judgement day with joy…because you have been declared completely righteous by Supreme Judge of the universe Jesus Christ
  2. Second way? the power to rejoice on a rainy day
    1. Dig - Sharp why? (Every way of life has to deal with the problem of pain and suffering…) Traffic story - Waze app
    2. V. 3-5 “Rejoice in our tribulations
    3. Show What this means for us? We stop using the Waze App approach to life, How? v. 5 Trusting the refreshing power of HS to get us through
    4. You? Not yet believer…Christianity does not provide an easy answer to pain, but it provide a sustain path of joy - Paul Tripp “God will take you where you do not want to go in order to produce in you what you could not achieve on your own”
  3. Thrid way? the power to rejoice on a beautiful day…
    1. Dig - Sharp why? College student rarely forgets to call Mother when sick, But when you just got asked out by Mr. right? Metor Archie, “When we are broke we pray, when we are rich we play”
    2. v. 6-11 (v.11) “Rejoice in God”
    3. and the most powerful surprise of the Gospel is how God’s makes former enemies his friends!!
    4. Sharp -
    5. You? Your heart?
  4. Conclusion
    1. POV - connect to Gospel - Are you experiencing the surprising power f
    2. What do we need to do about this? Surrender to the King, admit your guilt to the Judge, as for the refrehsn
      1. Specific application Instead of avoiding suffering ask for the HS
      2. Specific application Ask God to use your life and witness to surprise someone in your life.
    3. Why do we need to do this? Sharp Bruce Banta dying of cancer, surprised me with his joy in Jesus Christ…(Someone in your life, needs to be surprised by your joy, so many people in our city, one of the greatest powers we have for blessing ATL is the element of surprise when we find our joy in Christ!
    4. Pray

New resources for ministry

Parkside Journals and  Parkside Mission INC Parkside Journals is the new website for Emily's ongoing development of resources to help you connect neighbors to a better knowledge of God and his word.  The heartbeat of our mission remains the same, bringing the truth and love of Christ to neighborhoods through creating resources and training leaders. Much of this ministry is done in partnership with the church planting mission, Dunwoody Presbyterian Church. Parkside Mission is funded completely by the donations of individuals and churches that partner with this ministry. Thanks, Trent and Emily McEntyre

Living on mission during transition - support material - seasons of life

When I began preparing for these talks I immediately thought of some the insights I heard from David English. Here is a background essay on the seasons of life we all go through.    I was in my early 40’s and something was happening to me emotionally. For twenty years I had been involved in Christian ministry and loved what I was doing. College students were a joy to me and I had worked with them in various positions of responsibility locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. I had a wonderful wife and four beautiful children. Outwardly everything seemed to be going great. But inwardly something was wrong. Something was missing. It was the same feeling that I had before I had become a Christian at age 19. Emotionally life was not making sense and I felt that it should because, after all, I had committed my life to Christ and I was serving Him with all my heart. There were two circumstances that I was faced with that added to my confusion. Campus Crusade was in the m...
