3 Songs based on Psalm 121 - in preparation for worship at City Church Eastside Sept. 1st

I am looking forward to the opportunity to preach on Psalm 121 at City Church Eastside on Sunday September 1. We are beginning a new series of sermons called "A Long Obedience in the Same Direction." It is all about what it means and what it takes to thrive for the long haul in your relationship with Jesus.  Here three songs that are based on Psalm. Enjoy and let me know which is your favorite. And if you are in town this weekend, join us for worship this Sunday, www.citychurcheastside.org .

Samantha’s Answered Prayer for Morningside

When we made the decision to move to plant a church in the Piedmont Park area, we had no friends with children in Morningside Elementary School. So, we decided to pray for the opportunity for our daughters to meet at least one child in their grade during the summer before school started. Sometime in May we began to offer this request to the Lord, sharing it with some of our friends. Samantha and Langley, having a strong interest in the outcome of these prayers, prayed along as well. We saw the first answer to these prayers when we met some children Langley’s age (3 rd grade) through the local swim and diving team. But, we found no Morningside fourth graders besides Samantha on the team. We continued to pray, but the summer was starting to wind down. Garden Hills Pool Diving Team 2012. Samantha is in there somewhere. Just before we moved, Samantha and Langley spent a week at a Christian camp in North Georgia, Camp Glisson . (Trent’s brother, Bradley, is now the director ...

Parkside People and Prayer

Parkside People and Prayer Initially, all good ministry is about a group of people praying to God to enable them to love and serve others in a specific way. This is really a good idea when you think about how much good you can accomplish apart from Jesus (nothing!!). Prayer is vital because it is both the means to what we called to and the end for which we called as well. So, here are a few pictures of the people of the Parkside project and some ways you can pray with us. One of our last official events as ChristChurch Presbyterian members -- out to Mexican while the church teenagers babysat.  We are thankful for the wonderful support and friendships of the ChristChurch family.   Prayer request: For Trent, Emily and our daughters for the personal aspect of this transition. Walking and praying on the Beltline ( http://beltline.org)  with Alicia and Dan DeCrisio.  On our walk we passed million dollar (plus) homes and a few guys with all their worl...

Why is Trent preaching on "Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary" this Sunday?

We believe our journey from campus ministry to church planting is following a path that God is wonderfully clearing. The current steps in our journey are: 1. Build a base of prayer and financial support 2. Engage as a pastor in our mother-church, for a season 3. Adapt to and serve the Parkside neighborhoods Prayer walking the belt-line by the Park So, right now, I am mainly focusing on step #1, building a base of prayer and support so that Emily and I reach outreach and lead so that a Christ-centered, community focused, and mission minded church can be planted in an area that greatly needs one. (And, I might add, an area that, with such a church, could be a great blessing to Atlanta and the world!) Occasionally, I will have to opportunity to delve into step #2, engaging as a pastor at City Church Eastside. For example, I am attending some church staff meetings and I am preaching on occasion, including, Sunday July 1st, 2012.  Trent and Scott Armstrong, the l...

Driving through the "Parkside" parish

Drive by ministry will not suffice. But if you were to simply drive through the area that we are moving to in July and will soon be serving through City Church Eastside and the Parkside Plant project, what would you discover? Well, let me do the driving for you and share a few snapshots and thoughts about the area. The first phase of our new work is exploring. We need to get our "gear" together (mainly a base of prayer and financial support) and then start surveying the area (getting to know the people and institutions that make up this interesting culture of about 30,000 people). 1.  First Stop:  The principal park in Atlanta We've initially named our new neighborhood and ministry focus "Parkside" for the neighborhoods surrounding Piedmont Park in the heart of the City of Atlanta.  Piedmont Park hosts festivals and concerts throughout the year, serving as a cultural fulcrum for greater Atlanta. 2. Morningside:  The northern territory of City Church P...

New Chapter in Gospel Ministry - A brief intro

New chapter in the Gospel Ministry - A Brief Intro We have completed the year on campus at Tech and have moved immediately into an exciting new work. New mission - to plant a Christ-centered, mission minded, community church in a largely unreached neighborhood in Atlanta. We are partnering with the North Georgia Church Planting Network and a church planting church, CityChurch Eastside . This project will initially be called the “Parkside plant.” (Our focus neighborhoods are beside Atlanta’s Piedmont Park) New support needs    Just like our work with Campus Crusade, we depend on financial support from individuals and churches. To make sure we can work full-time to reach this area and plant a multiplying church, we are planning to seek outside support for the next 3-5 years. New donation instructions    Our support and finances will be handled through our new church planting partner, CityChurch Eastside. You have two options for ma...

Alive Together - Ephesians study intro

Alive Together   Alive! together alive Together!  Religion and even secular philosophy constantly ask whether we are wrong or right. But the Apostle Paul (and Jesus too for that matter) gave first importance to whether we are dead or alive. The New Testament letter of  Ephesians is one of the clearest accounts of how the Gospel offers us the gift of life in Christ.  American life in the early 21st century has made an idol out of individualism. As a result, even the well adjusted among us tend to live for our own little kingdom instead of living faithfully in the covenant community that God brings together in Christ. These are two of the great purposes of the letter to the Ephesians. I hope you enjoy the Alive Together series of talks and will benefit from studying the book together in your discipleship groups. Study (Written and Edited by Trent and Emily McEntyre for GT cru) Welcome Disciples,   We have an amazing privilege to help one another fo...

What are the best books on evangelism?

Often our staff or students ask my recommendations for books about God, the Bible, and ministry. Below is a list of recommended books compiled by cru (aka Campus Crusade for Christ) for our staff training curriculum. I will add a few personal comments and recommendations as well. Please comment if you have read any of these or have another book you recommend and why. Books on Evangelism: Bright, Bill;  Witnessing Without Fear Trent says, "I have read this but it has been a while. Bill Bright is inspirational and exemplary when it comes to sharing your faith. If you are not sure about this, look for his condensed version, The Joy of Sharing Jesus Carson, D. A. (ed.); Telling the Truth: Evangelizing Postmoderns   I have not read this, but have read other works by Carson and have attended his seminary lectures. He is an excellent teacher overall and is one the key leaders in the Gospel Coalition . Coleman, Robert; The Master Plan of Evangelism This is a clas...
